My name is Tom Brogtrop. And I’m part of something challenging.
I’m always looking for new challenges and opportunities in my professional and personal life. So I’m lucky to have a job that gives me both.
As a senior business development manager, I’m often asked to work on new business opportunities in different countries around the world. The experiences I’ve gained and the people I’ve met along the way have made a big difference to my career and my outlook on life.
It started a few years ago, when I got the opportunity to work in Cairo. At first I thought I would only go for a year or so. But it turned out to be a wonderful experience.
Cairo was amazing – a complete attack on the senses. But thanks to the support of my colleagues I soon started to feel like a local. I picked up a bit of Arabic. Even the traffic didn’t seem too bad after a while.
One year quickly turned into three. I married my girlfriend in Egypt, and both of our children were also born in Cairo.
The contract ended, but my wife and I decided we weren’t ready to go home yet. So when I was asked if I would like to move to the office in Iran, we jumped at the chance.
Living and working in Tehran has been one of the best experiences of my career. The work has been rewarding and the local people and culture have been amazing. We even got to meet the Dutch ambassador in Tehran. He gave us a farewell dinner when we left.
The size and the scale of this company means there are always opportunities to try new things and take on new challenges.
So if you like to move out of your comfort and time zone once in a while, Nokia Siemens Networks is a great place to be.
