Broadband with no boundaries
Speed, simplicity and services – a recipe for broadband success.
Easy-to-use, fast access coupled with rich Internet and multimedia services are driving today’s spectacular growth in fixed and mobile broadband.
Broadband is now firmly established in the minds of end users. Translating this awareness into revenue depends on creating a superb broadband experience focused on the needs of the subscriber.
Our vision
Broadband is reaching more and more people. By 2015, five billion people will be connected, with well more than half enjoying broadband access. The Internet will be the predominant source of applications.
Market trends
Broadband is experiencing huge growth, driven by services such as Web 2.0, online communities, music and video streaming, downloads, IPTV and Mobile TV.
What’s more, broadband will become increasingly recognized as an answer to the financial downturn now setting in, as well as rising environmental pressures. Broadband enables highly cost-effective substitutes for travel, high street shopping, face-to-face meetings and traditional media.
Consumer trends
Broadband access is already an essential part of many people’s lives, at work, at home and on the go. Our research shows that:
-
High-speed Internet (at least 4 Mbit/s) has become a standard for fixed access in mature markets, while normal phone lines at home are still common in emerging markets (with speeds up to 1 Mbit/s).
-
The personal computer remains the most used device for accessing the Internet at home. Yet, 13 percent of all Internet users in mature markets go online via a mobile phone when they are at home.
-
In the near future, 44 percent of online users in mature markets and 54 percent in emerging markets will increase their existing (fixed) bandwidth.

Speed, simplicity, services
Clear trends are emerging. Any Communications Service Provider’s (CSP) broadband strategy will be based on one or more of three focal points - speed, simplicity and services.
-
High speed and cheaper access. CSP profitability will depend on providing high speed and cheaper access by making the most of existing access networks in parallel with the deployment of new technologies.
-
Service simplicity and availability. Services must be easy to use and available everywhere. Service availability and user experience can be enhanced by deploying broadband to the mass market, and by providing stable indoor and outdoor coverage.
-
Multimedia and Internet services drive new and differentiated sources of revenue by offering rich and high-quality multimedia services, like mobile and IPTV, with advertising and fast service roll out to maximize and transform business.
