Energy Efficiency Equals Business Growth

Good news. Operators can now reduce their energy costs by as much as 50% depending on the current energy estate of their network, thanks to the latest holistic managed energy solution by Nokia Siemens Networks, that are environmentally sustainable and bottom-line friendly.

Energy efficiency is now a global issue. A typical operator's energy consumption in the network accounts for 86 percent of the total energy consumed, or as much as 30 percent of network operating costs. As operators continue to expand their business, especially in rural or remote areas where there are no grids or unreliable grids, they will continue to face escalating energy costs, in addition to global pressures to protect the environment and reduce their carbon foot-print. Striking a balance between energy cost reduction and providing competitive services is a key challenge faced by many operators.

Recognizing these needs, Nokia Siemens Networks’ Managed Energy solution has taken a collaborative consultative approach to support operators, from energy procurement, network design, use of renewable energy to power systems monitoring. What’s more, Nokia Siemens Networks’ Managed Energy Service unlocks hidden savings for operators based on these four phases:

  • Products, solutions and multivendor services
  • Operational services
  • Smart energy Procurement
  • Green incentives

This enhanced approach to energy efficiency not only offers a comprehensive portfolio of products, solutions and multi-vendor services that can reduce the energy consumption of operators’ sites and networks, but also manage their entire energy usage.

Since efficient energy management is increasingly being supported by governments and financial institutions through various measures, the solution also facilitates in areas of tax and other financial incentives, green credits, grants or preferential interest rates, to enable operators to either offset their operational expenditure or underwrite investments in energy savings.

At the recent CommunicAsia, Nokia Siemens Networks demonstrated how our Managed Energy Services have helped operators ensure constant network availability and achieve environmental targets while reducing their overall energy costs. Opex savings are achieved through the deployment of suitable energy solutions.

The solutions are tailored based on a detailed analysis of the current operator's energy estate, through various energy performance metrics which is retrieved from the site by the centralized and remote monitoring system; hence the use of a consultative approach is necessary to fully understand the energy profile of a network by analyzing key energy performance metrics both directly on-site and remotely from the centralized monitoring system.

Here’s a unique example of how Nokia Siemens Networks delivered a managed energy solution for a operator in a developed country, which has an overall advanced electricity infastructure.

German operator E-Plus became the first in its country to operate a base station without the help of an electricity grid. The site relies on a combination of solar and wind power, supported by fuel cell and deep cycle battery technology, thus allowing E-Plus to reduce its carbon footprint.

To increase solar energy production for the site operation, Nokia Siemens Networks provided a solar tracking system. Its Green Energy Controller manages the solar energy, a wind turbine, a fuel cell system and the deep cycle battery technology, which is mounted in special cabinets prolongs its lifespan. Nokia Siemens Networks has also extended its network management platform, NetAct, for network monitoring and optimization, to enable the energy management of this site. The operator was able to achieve zero carbon dioxide emissions during operation, which supports its aim of increase its energy efficiency by 5 percent by end 2012, and subsequently, 20 percent by 2020.

As an active and leading player in the energy management space, Nokia Siemens Networks has committed many resources to deliver proven Managed Energy Services by building and leveraging major strategic partnerships in design, development and operations.

We believe that every operator needs the right partner to manage their entire energy estates, so that they can benefit from enhanced network quality and operational efficiency through reduction of energy costs, thereby leaving them more resources to focus on core activities such as growing their business.
