New converged optical network switch drives efficiency and scalability
San Diego, California, USA – March 22, 2010
Nokia Siemens Networks unveils Optical Transport Network Switch at OFC 2010
Nokia Siemens Networks today introduces the latest addition to its optical network portfolio, the OTN Switch. Launched at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC) in San Diego, the OTN Switch helps operators efficiently address surging data traffic and the migration to next-generation converged optical networks by providing increased flexibility and scalability thanks to its service-independent traffic switching.
“Bandwidth-hungry applications and the widespread adoption of smartphones are putting increased pressure on operators’ network infrastructure,” said Robert Jedlitschka, manager of the Next Generation Metro product line at Nokia Siemens Networks. “The OTN Switch not only enhances network efficiency but also supports operators in the migration of their legacy circuit-switched transport networks to next-generation packet-optimized resilient optical transport networks. With its high scalability, our new switch supports a multitude of applications in metro- and backbone-transport networks.”
The OTN Switch offers multiple benefits to operators, including the more efficient use of network resources, multi-service support in a single platform, and capital and operational savings by optimizing the use of network transport layers. The switch capacity ranges from 1.2 terabytes per second (Tbps) to more than 20 Tbps with 100G optimized line interfaces.
The OTN Switch complements Nokia Siemens Networks’ existing optical transport portfolio and can be tightly integrated to installed platforms to offer customers a highly efficient, robust, reliable, and future-proof next-generation optical transport network.
