Nokia Siemens Networks supports landmark TD-LTE video call

Shanghai, Taipei – May 31, 2010

Collaborates with industry partners to conduct live TD-LTE demo between Shanghai and Taipei

Nokia Siemens Networks recently facilitated a high resolution live video call between TD-LTE devices connected to separate TD-LTE networks. The call occurred between China Mobile’s pre-commercial TD-LTE network for the Shanghai World Expo and National Chiao Tung University’s (NCTU) TD-LTE trial network in Taipei, set up by Nokia Siemens Networks.

“This is a landmark achievement,” said Chung-Yu Wu, the president of NCTU. “It is a showcase for collaboration between the telecommunications industries of mainland China and Taiwan. Trials such as these go a long way in furthering TD-LTE interests in the region – and what better platform to show it off than Shanghai Expo!”

Nokia Siemens Networks recently built NCTU’s TD-LTE trial network supporting the university’s research program in Taipei. The company provided all the necessary TD-LTE equipment including core network and multiple base stations, along with the corresponding services. Nokia Siemens Networks is also providing TD-LTE indoor coverage for the Finland Pavilion during the World Expo in Shanghai.

“This showcase underpins our commitment to fully support TD-LTE commercialization and demonstrates our regional and global momentum in this area,” said Ding Weiqing, head of China Mobile Customer Business Team at Nokia Siemens Networks. “We are well prepared to participate in various TD-LTE trials and drive commercial TD-LTE network deployments within this year.”

About National Chiao Tung University

National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) was originally founded in Shanghai in 1896 under the name of Nanyang College and shares the same origin as the Jiaotong universities in mainland China. In 1958, NCTU was re-established in Hsinchu City. Since then, the University had became the forerunner of science and technology in Taiwan and laid a firm foundation for the Hsinchu Science Park, the “Silicon Valley” of Taiwan.

Note to Editors:
Long Term Evolution (LTE) is the next-generation mobile broadband technology and the evolutionary step from GSM, WCDMA/HSPA/HSPA+, TD-SCDMA, CDMA and WiMAX networks. It promises the delivery of broadband and smart device services thanks to increased data rates, reduced latency and a scalable flat all-IP network architecture. Nokia Siemens Networks is the frontrunner in LTE, being the first to make an LTE call using commercial hardware and standards-compliant software in September 2009.
Nokia Siemens Networks provides a complete end-to-end solution for both LTE modes (FDD and TDD) comprising its award-winning, software upgradable Flexi Multiradio Base Station and its core network solution including Flexi NS and Flexi NG.The company has already been selected by 11 operators for commercial LTE deployment and is currently running LTE trials and pilots with over 25 operators across the globe. Nokia Siemens Networks is at the forefront of TD-LTE development and commercialization, actively working with telecom operators and device manufacturers alike towards cohesive development of the technology.
Nokia Siemens Networks has a long track record in demonstrating its technological leadership in LTE:

  • November 2006 Nokia Siemens Networks conducted the world’s first LTE demo with a handover to HSPA at the ITU World Congress in Hong Kong
  • September 2008 Nokia Siemens Networks shipped the industry’s first LTE base station hardware to customers.
  • November 2008 Nokia Siemens Networks conducted the world's first demonstration of LTE-Advanced Relaying technology.
  • September 2009 Nokia Siemens Networks made the world’s first LTE call using a commercial base station and fully standards-compliant software (3GPP Rel 8 March 09 baseline).
  • September 2009 Nokia Siemens Networks conducted with China Mobile the world’s first TD-LTE femtocell demonstration
  • October 2009 Nokia Siemens Networks conducted the world’s first TD-LTE call using its Flexi Multiradio base station and fully standards-compliant software (3GPP Rel 8 March 09 baseline).
  • October 2009 Nokia Siemens Networks conducts end-to-end LTE interoperability testing with four leading device vendors across several frequency bands.
  • November 2009 Nokia Siemens Networks is a founding member of the One Voice initiative providing a blueprint for the early deployment of IMS-based Voice over LTE service. The company’s Fast Track approach is fully compliant with One Voice.
  • December 2009 Nokia Siemens Networks rings up another first in LTE with 3GPP standardized voice over LTE calls. Successful IMS-compliant voice calls and SMS messaging using standardized LTE equipment marks an important step towards commercial voice over LTE deployments.
  • March 2010 World’s first call between different VoLTE clients showcased at CTIA 2010. Nokia Siemens Networks demonstrates standards-based Voice over LTE (VoLTE) interoperability using two different clients running on Samsung LTE devices
  • April 2010 Nokia Siemens Networks sets up industry’s first TD-LTE Open Lab. Provides smart phone and terminal testing facility to accelerate TD-LTE ecosystem
