Nokia Siemens Networks to showcase TD-LTE capability at Mobile World Congress 2010

Barcelona, Spain - February 11, 2010

Affirms commitment to TD-LTE development at industry’s biggest telecom event

Nokia Siemens Networks will showcase the world’s leading TD-LTE femtocell, endorsed by China Mobile, at this year’s Mobile World Congress. Aimed at addressing indoor coverage for 4G mobile broadband in China, the TD-LTE femotcell highlights Nokia Siemens Networks’ roadmap to support future TD-LTE rollouts.

“The demand for mobile broadband is growing rapidly in mature and emerging markets alike. To meet this demand, operators need to invest in significant additional frequency spectrum as well as new and efficient mobile broadband technologies,” said Marc Rouanne, head of Network Systems, Nokia Siemens Networks. ”We are committed to supporting our customers to take every possible step to drive TD-LTE development and globalization.”

Nokia Siemens Networks’ experience center at the Mobile World Congress will showcase its TD-LTE solution with a femtocell* demo for indoor coverage. Customers will also be able to examine its Single RAN LTE for both TD-LTE and FDD - an LTE option using software-defined radio. They will be able to explore the capabilities of Nokia Siemens Networks’ field proven, award winning Flexi Multiradio BTS, which is the platform for both TD-LTE and FDD.

As the initiator of global TD-LTE in 3GPP and the key contributor in 3GPP on TD-LTE specification development, Nokia Siemens Networks has played a pioneering role in TD-LTE development. Well ahead of its peers, Nokia Siemens Networks conducted the world’s first TD-LTE data call in its R&D Centre in Hangzhou, leveraging the field proven and award winning, innovative Flexi Multiradio Base Station hardware and fully standard compliant LTE software (March 2009 baseline of 3GPP Rel.8 standard).

In collaboration with China Mobile, Nokia Siemens Networks conducted the industry’s first TD-LTE lab demonstrations in 2008, followed by the world’s first femtocell demo last year. The company has further expanded its R&D team in Hangzhou and Beijing, China, to support the commercial rollout of TD-LTE and leverages major industry platforms to promote TD-LTE, including the GSMA Mobile Asia Congress in Hongkong in November 2009 and ITU Telecom World 2009.

*Femtocells are small cellular base stations for indoor coverage and capacity for homes, offices and public places. They utilize cellular access methods (e.g. licensed spectrum), features and services, which differentiate them from WiFi access points. TD-LTE Femtocells can fully leverage the advantages of TDD frequency, provide a fast and flexible indoor coverage solution and effectively manage network capacity and cost.
