Telecom Italia and Nokia Siemens Networks trial LTE in Turin (Italy)

Milan, Italy – 24 August 2010

Telecom Italia, Italy’s largest communications service provider, is undertaking a trial of Long Term Evolution (LTE)* technology, in collaboration with Nokia Siemens Networks, in some city areas of Turin, Italy. The trial is a major step in the operator’s efforts to bring next-generation mobile services to its customers.

Telecom Italia, together with Nokia Siemens Networks, started in various Turin city areas a trial of Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology.

With the 4G mobile network TIM customers will enjoy services such as high definition video streaming, video conferencing, online gaming and many other multimedia applications for smart devices which respond exactly to the most exigent end user demand. Telecom Italia trials the impact of LTE technology on its own networks supported by Nokia Siemens Networks’ technologies to finetune its transition towards 4G.

Nokia Siemens Networks’ efficient end-to-end offering for LTE comprises its Flexi Multiradio Base Station, as well as its Evolved Packet Core (EPC) technology, which consists of the highly-scalable Flexi NG (Network Gateway) and Flexi NS (Network Server). Nokia Siemens Networks’ commercial LTE accommodates high volumes of real-time traffic to enable operators to meet the data surge caused by the use of always-connected smart mobile devices.

Notes to Editors

*Long Term Evolution (LTE) is the next-generation mobile broadband technology and the evolutionary step from GSM, WCDMA/HSPA/HSPA+, TD-SCDMA, CDMA and WiMAX networks. LTE efficiently delivers best user experience of broadband and smart device services due to increased data rates, reduced latency and scalable flat all-IP network architecture. Nokia Siemens Networks is at the forefront of LTE development, being the first to make an LTE call using commercial hardware and standards-compliant software in 2009.

Nokia Siemens Networks provides a complete end-to-end solution for both LTE modes – FDD (Frequency Division Duplexing for paired spectrum) and TDD (Time Division Duplexing for unpaired spectrum) – comprising its award-winning, software upgradable Flexi Multiradio Base Station and its core network offering including Flexi NS (Network Server) and Flexi NG (Network Gateway).

The company has already been selected by 16 operators for commercial LTE deployment including Harbinger for the LightSquared network in the US, NTT DOCOMO in Japan, Zain Bahrain, Telenor Denmark, TeliaSonera in the Nordics, Mobily in Saudi Arabia, Elisa in Finland, and Verizon in the US. Currently Nokia Siemens Networks is also running LTE trials with over 25 operators across the globe.
