GSM celebrates 20 years
On July 1, 1991, the world’s first GSM call on a commercial network was made between Finland’s former prime minister Harri Holkeri and vice mayor of the city of Tampere Kaarina Suonio. The first GSM network was built by Telenokia and Siemens – today’s Nokia Siemens Networks – for the Finnish operator Radiolinja, now operating under the name Elisa.

Dutch MVNO Intercity Zakelijk partners with Nokia Siemens Networks
Intercity Zakelijk, a Dutch mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) for business customers in the Netherlands, will soon be able to offer new features and differentiated services. The operator has awarded Nokia Siemens Networks a long-term contract to design, implement and support its complete mobile core network. Nokia Siemens Networks’ technology and services will allow Intercity Zakelijk to differentiate itself by providing services more rapidly and flexibly.

Yutong Bus uses Nokia Siemens Networks’ telematics applications
Nokia Siemens Networks has signed a contract with Yutong Bus company Ltd, to provide a machine to machine (M2M) service platform and develop various telematics applications. Telematics applications enable exclusive services such as emergency response, fleet management and remote diagnostics for Yutong buses leading to transport services.

Nokia Siemens Networks to provide broadband for Austrian trains
Passengers using WESTbahn’s luxury express trains on the Salzburg-Vienna route will enjoy a superior travel experience with always-on broadband and other online services by the end of 2011. The Austrian railway operator has commissioned Nokia Siemens Networks to equip seven new double-deck trains with broadband access. The broadband connectivity will also enable the monitoring of trains and onboard equipment to improve operational support.

Nokia Siemens Networks boosts base station power for greater capacity
Nokia Siemens Networks has expanded its Liquid Radio architecture* by launching a new, high power radio module for its Flexi Multiradio Base Station family** at CommunicAsia 2011 in Singapore. The higher output power means that the module offers greater GSM coverage and increased 3G data capacity at the edge of cells, providing an overall 40% increase in performance. This provides operators with the ability to efficiently enhance their network. In addition, the ability of the new radio module to allocate carriers frequencies across a broad 60 MHz range reduces the size of hardware required per base station site allowing more flexibility in deployment.
