Orange chooses Carrier Ethernet for enterprise markets

As businesses of all sizes become increasingly dependent on information to run their operations, the market for Ethernet Services to interconnect business sites and data stores is rising. It’s an opportunity that Orange Business Services is meeting in France with Carrier Ethernet technology.

Carrier Ethernet is the technology of choice for Orange Business Services as it builds its portfolio of services for France’s deregulated and fiercely competitive enterprise data services market. In 2009, the provider is aiming to launch “Business Ethernet” Service, a new generation of optical Ethernet-based services with nationwide coverage in France.

“Our commitment is to offer affordable 10 Mbit/s access across France and to open up the mid-market business for long-distance Ethernet networks (extended MAN),” explains Hervé Cretin, Operational Marketing Manager, Ethernet and SAN, Global Com. Solutions at Orange Business Services. “The Quality of Service, affordability, scalability, simplicity and resiliency of Carrier Ethernet enable us to bring advanced enterprise Ethernet services within the reach of medium-sized businesses.”

Enabling business connectivity

The major benefit for enterprise customers of these Ethernet-based services is high quality of service, at lower cost, to ensure business connectivity with assured 24/7 data access as well as disaster recovery with fast resiliency, low latency and jitter. The solutions also enable cost savings through consolidation of IT architectures, sophisticated equipment and new services (replication, virtualization) in data centers.

The 2009 launch of the Business Ethernet service from Orange confirms the current portfolio of Carrier Ethernet. It includes the MAN (Metro Area Network) solution that offers high-speed mode point-to-point, any-to-any (Virtual Private LAN Service Traffic Engineering), and i-SAN solution for interconnection of storage area networks - a service launched in mid-2007. For instance, i-SAN is able to interconnect two or more data centers enabling data centralization and real-time data replication between main and back-up data centers. Orange Business Services offers its customers the simplicity of a single contract, a 24/7 on-site after-sales service, and end-to-end supervision of the network.

A lasting relationship

A part of Orange’s Ethernet portfolio (MAN Ethernet, Datacenter and i-SAN services) is built on Nokia Siemens Networks’ high-performance aggregation and edge switches with provisioning and management controlled by powerful management solutions. The system enables enterprises to choose any topology (point-to-point, multipoint-to-point, or multipoint-to-multipoint), to access multiple services including VoIP, IP-VPN, LAN-to-LAN, and enjoy rapid site additions/alterations or on-demand bandwidth provisioning.

The Nokia Siemens Networks Carrier Ethernet Transport (CET) solution meets all the requirements for a business Ethernet solution including low delay, scalable/flexible capacity and long reach.

The France Telecom Group has a long history of collaboration with Nokia Siemens Networks (formerly Atrica) on Carrier Ethernet systems, dating back to 2000. The cooperation has been driven by an open sharing of experience and expertise between the two companies. Beyond the technology, Nokia Siemens Networks brings innovation and a vision of the market and ecosystem for Ethernet.
