All-IP mobile backhaul – the power behind LTE

Optimizing mobile backhaul to cope with the vast rise in data traffic created by next generation radio access is a growing requirement for many operators, as is the need to cut the cost per bit for bandwidth-heavy applications.

To meet these requirements, Nokia Siemens Networks has developed a comprehensive mobile backhaul solution. It is the first fully integrated and Ethernet based end-to-end solution to lower site and transport costs, and increase quality of service (QoS) by optimizing the entire transport network.

One of the key components in our carrier Ethernet technology is the concept of “hard QoS”. The solution includes mechanisms to guarantee the bandwidth of individual services through a connection-oriented approach and bandwidth reservation of network resources along the path, similar to legacy TDM networks. This cuts the probability of queuing delays, reducing transport delays for LTE mobile service applications.

Implementing our mobile backhaul “zero footprint solution” for sites can optimize site costs by up to 25 percent by eliminating additional shelter equipment, space and power consumption. Our centralized operation and administration management suite, NetActTM Transport, implemented across the transport network, can help staff react much more quickly to performance management, service provisioning and fault management issues.

To get the best all-IP mobile backhaul solution for a particular operator requires an interactive, consultative approach to provide full survivability, packet synchronization, QoS and security functionality. In this way we can maximize the quality of experience, minimize OPEX and implement the right technology where and when it is needed.
