More coverage, more capacity, fewer sites
A superior customer experience of mobile broadband means the service being available everywhere. This means that coverage needs to be extended beyond urban areas, while mobile broadband connectivity within buildings needs to be improved.
"The High-Performance Site Solution provides up to 40 percent more coverage and 80 percent more capacity, without implementing new base station sites."
Typically this involves adding radio cells. Yet available spectrum is limited so the only short-term solution is to add new base station sites or sectors.
Conventional sites feature a heavy cabinetbased base station at the ground connected via inefficient and heavy feeder cables to the antennas at the top. Adding sectors needs further feeder cables and equipment.
Nokia Siemens Networks’ High-Performance Site Solution based on Flexi Base Station (BTS) overcomes these drawbacks by enabling feederless sites. Flexi modules can all be mounted outdoors, directly on the towers, poles or walls, which also saves costly floor space.
Combining the Flexi BTS with so-called dual-beam antennas allows six-sector sites to be built with a three-sector look and feel. A field trial of a six-sector installation has shown that upgrading a traditional three-sector site solution with the High-Performance Site Solution provides up to 40 percent more coverage and 80 percent more capacity, without implementing new base station sites.
Performance monitoring showed that HSDPA traffic increased by 25 percent and voice traffic by 40 percent compared to the previous three-sector site. Enhanced indoor and outdoor coverage was also seen as well as more than 30 percent increase in user connection throughput. These improvements were achieved by removing feeder loss, increasing antenna gain and changing the sectorization.
