China Telecom revamps mobile video experience
By launching China’s first high end 3G video streaming services in 2009, China Telecom has differentiated itself in the market, and given its growing customer base a richer mobile video streaming experience.
"Our flexible and secure streaming control capability ensures service stability and an improved user experience"
The centralized platform delivers nationwide live mobile TV, video on demand and video download services at a quality that is at least 50 percent higher than the previous 2G solution.
Having launched 3G services, China Telecom was keen to provide a richer customer experience for its video services by upgrading its existing 2G platform originally supplied by Nokia Siemens Networks. The first phase of the upgrade, involving a rebuild of the video service’s portal, was completed within one month, enabling China Telecom to comfortably launch commercial services on 15th March – well within its stipulated time frame.
Customer base boosted
In this project, the streaming service’s capacity was doubled to support up to 10,000 concurrent users at speeds of 160 kbps or even more. China Telecom saw a more than 25 percent rise in the number of subscribers to the service within its first three months.
“Our flexible and secure streaming control capability ensures service stability and an improved user experience,” says Zhang Tong, Vice President of Nokia Siemens Networks’ Greater China Region.
As well as the faster speeds, the portal upgrade was key to the improved customer experience. Not only has the look and feel of the portal been revitalized, but it intelligently adapts page and video content to different mobile devices. From the same WAP page and single video content, the portal provides a range of WAP pages and video files to suit the different screen sizes of the various mobile devices being used. Customers get a quality browsing and video experience matched to their specific handset’s screen size.
Nokia Siemens Networks has implemented 3G video streaming solutions for more than 25 operators across the globe. “Given our previous deployment experience, and our strong local presence, we were ideally positioned to adhere to China Telecom’s launch schedule,” explains Zhang Tong.
