Technology talk: Making IPoDWDM easier

Nokia Siemens Networks and Juniper are creating a ground-breaking solution that brings together optical networking and IP routing. Operators can benefit from a highly flexible, reliable and cost-effective way to scale their networks to meet growing traffic volumes.

The companies envisage a cooperation on cost-optimized 10G, 40G and 100G IP over DWDM (IPoDWDM) solutions with management integration and GMPLS control plane interworking.

Conventionally, IP and optical transport networks are managed separately. The new solution will simplify the issue by enabling the entire router-to-optical link to be managed as a single entity. Reliability is increased due to alarm correlation between optical and IP layers and end-to-end performance monitoring. With IPoDWDM, OPEX savings can be achieved. Some CAPEX savings are expected in the 40G and 100G area. The Nokia Siemens Networks and Juniper IPoDWDM solution makes the DWDM interface in the router as an integral part of the DWDM system, supported by our automated DWDM planning tool TransNet.

This will enable operators to scale their networks efficiently to provide the capacity needed for the rapid growth of applications such as video, virtualization and cloud computing. Operators will also benefit from faster service provisioning because only one DWDM interface will need to be installed and configured.
