Technology talk: Network element management system keeps it simple

Simplicity in building and managing networks equates directly to greater savings.

That’s the philosophy behind the Open EMS Suite (OES) software platform from Nokia Siemens Networks, which provides a basic network element management system (EMS) out-of-the-box.

OES contains generic services, built-in applications, and developer tools to create network and service management products and solutions without starting from scratch each time. It is fully scalable to accommodate the needs of expanding networks and businesses. In addition it provides plug & play features to Nokia Siemens Networks’ network management solution, NetAct™.

For example, the O&M Agent within OES comprises ready-made components that can cut the time for network element integration by 90 percent compared to traditional development methods. Other modules support performance and fault management, as well as software development.

In fact, the multi-technology, multi-vendor OES platform is so adaptable that it has recently been adopted beyond the telecoms industry as the platform for a wind farm management system. Irish company ServusNet will demonstrate its OES-based solution for utilities at the European Utilities Telecom Council in Budapest on 3 – 6 November 2009.
