Join us in meeting the opportunity of change

In this issue of unite our theme is Business Transformation, one of the most critical topics for operators and vendors alike.

At Nokia Siemens Networks, transformation is a key element in our strategy. We are practicing what we preach, reworking our business to meet the new challenges of the evolving industry. We’ve been investing in many areas of our business with a relentless focus on innovation and transforming into a true solutions and services provider.

Transformation is a big effort for us as we seek to provide solutions to address industry challenges, help service providers address the challenge of managing massive traffic growth at ever lower cost and build a portfolio that enables growth both for us and our customers. Kai Konola is leading our efforts to build an unparalleled solution capability within Nokia Siemens Networks – and in his article Putting the trust into transformation he gives us his view of Business Transformation and what it really means for the industry.

We are investing in India, expanding our R&D in China and moving our Services hub to India. Innovation is fundamental and I believe that these new growth markets will be the future source of world-leading innovation. At its most fundamental level, transformation is about growth. The telecoms sector has traditionally evolved with long development cycles. But the future demands a different rhythm.

Our solutions deal with the critical transformation challenges, enabling service providers to pick up the pace and address the issues quickly and efficiently. We believe that traffic will grow a hundred-fold by 2015, and some service providers tell me they are beginning to think even that is a conservative figure. A real bottleneck is backhaul, an area in which we believe that cost-effective technologies will have a powerful impact. In article Ride the traffic tidal wave with Carrier Ethernet we look at how Carrier Ethernet can transform transport networks.

Meanwhile, the Internet continues to be a huge opportunity. Social networking is a great example. It has taken the world by storm and is still developing fast. It presents both a threat and opportunity for service providers, as our article as our article Social networking – threat or opportunity? describes, but it is a phenomenon that can’t be ignored.

Yet service providers have tremendous advantages – a good understanding of customers, excellent security models with authentication, location data and a trusted charging relationship that they can leverage into micro payments and banking. We need real innovation to take these assets and build the services around the Internet that will drive growth.

Business Transformation is a big issue, one that affects us all. We want to work with you, our customers, so that we can all prosper in the new era of communications. I look forward to the next time we meet.
