While threats and opportunities abound in the telco space, the pressure is really on for service providers to remain competitive in their offering and attractive in the services they provide. ‘Who better than Nokia Siemens Networks to help them, when we’re going through the very same business transformation issues ourselves?’ says Martti Ylikoski, product manager, OSS Solutions Management & Applications.
‘Our move to a new model of architecture - along the lines of NGOSS principles - is happening in different layers’ says Martti. ‘At one end we are building really large business processes and at the other smaller operational processes where several OSS applications are integrated together. The core of this technology is a so-called ‘service bus’ with a centralized service application integration point and service application orchestration.’
‘One layer down is the Element Abstraction Layer where OSS applications interact with the network elements to hide the complexity of telco protocols and create a multi-vendor capable environment, allowing us to build a partnering ecosystem that is really powerful for customers.’
‘Agility for operators is needed in two layers of their architecture. There is their need to adapt quickly to the changing and ever-challenging environment using existing building blocks. Business Process Management Systems help here by centralizing the application integration logic and making the process logic changeable through a GUI based approach. BPMS are potent tools for the SOA based integration of existing applications.’
‘And then there are more fundamental changes that require new functionality in the underlying application level. These two levels of flexibility are independent of each other. A solution can be extremely flexible using BPMS alone, but from time to time the need to add new functionality will occur and OES provides the vital flexibility to do this quickly and in a cost efficient manner.’
