Mobile data to outstrip voice traffic by 2011

Driving Nokia Siemens Networks' leading position in data is the company's range of packet core solutions that allows operators to handle a huge number of mobile consumers, even if they are using data services heavily, with a very small amount of network equipment. This combined with technical innovation, such as Direct Tunnel, which provides operators with a simpler "flat" connectivity architecture, makes scaling with growing traffic much easier and more importantly, commercially viable.

Direct Tunnel leads the way to a fully "flat" architecture, which is the target architecture for Evolved Packet Core and Long Term Evolution as well.

Close to 300 customers use Nokia Siemens Networks' packet core solutions including operators such as America Movil, AT&T, NTT DoCoMo, Oi, Telecom Italia, Telefonica, and Vodafone.

While Nokia Siemens Networks estimates that the number of bytes of mobile voice traffic will continue to grow steadily, the growing popularity of mobile broadband services and even machine-to-machine applications will create an exponential rise in the number of bytes of data traffic carried by mobile packet core networks worldwide. This will result in a yearly doubling of data traffic from almost 400 petabytes (400 million gigabytes) a year in 2009 to almost 2,000 petabytes (2 billion gigabytes) a year by 2011, bypassing the estimated volume of voice traffic (1,200 petabytes).

Nokia Siemens Networks' Direct Tunnel technology allows user data traffic to be routed directly from the radio access network to the core network's Internet gateway node, bypassing the control node (the Serving GPRS Service Node, the SGSN) through which data traffic is routed in legacy networks. By taking the more optimized route through the network, Direct Tunnel brings lower OPEX costs, as fewer data links are needed, and improves transmission efficiency. Nokia Siemens Networks is today the clear leader in Direct Tunnel with more than 50 deployments worldwide, of which 28 are live in commercial networks.

The Nokia Siemens Networks Evolved Packet Core (EPC) network solution allows operators to modernize their network to support a wide variety of access types such as 2G, 3G, HSPA and LTE, using a common core network.
